Introduction
The Glagolitic alphabet is the oldest known Slavic alphabet. It was created in the 9th century by Saint Cyril, a Byzantine monk from Thessaloniki. He and his brother, Saint Methodius, were sent by the Byzantine emperor Michael III to Great Moravia to spread Christianity among the Slavs in the area, so they decided to translate liturgical books into the Old Slavic language that was understandable to the general population, which resulted with Cyril inventing a new letter– Glagolitic.
In your eight-day adventure of exploring the magnificent coast of Istria, you get opportunity to perfect your skill of letter cutting in stone, while immersing in the symbolism of Glagolitic letters.
Namely, the Glagolitic alphabet as a script tells a story not only about the history of the Croatian people, but also about the nature in which it is located, which it is a part of. The part that we all are. Due to its precisely established symbolism, the Glagolitic alphabet can be mapped into fine art. It is made up of symbolic geometric shapes: squares, circles, triangles and crosses – symbols representing the earth, eternity, trinity, and Jesus Christ through whom God speaks to us.
